Updates
Checking for updates
Section titled “Checking for updates”MeowX checks for a new version automatically when it starts. You can turn this off in Me › Advanced › Application › Auto Check Updates; even then, MeowX checks at least once every four weeks.
To check by hand, open Me › About › Check for updates. MeowX tells you if you are already on the latest version, or if it could not reach the update server.
When a new version is found, a dialog shows the new version number, your current version, the package it will download (file name and size) and a list of changes. Once a new version has been found, the About entry on the Me tab also shows “New version available” with its number, so you can come back to it later.
Windows
Section titled “Windows”On Windows, MeowX updates itself in one click, for both the installer and the portable package.
- In the new-version dialog, click Update now.
- MeowX downloads the update and shows the progress (percentage and megabytes). You can Cancel at any time.
- MeowX checks the download’s size and SHA-256 checksum. A file that does not match is discarded.
- MeowX quits, the update is applied, and MeowX starts again by itself.
What happens in step 4 depends on your package:
| Package | How it updates |
|---|---|
| Setup installer | The new installer runs silently with only a progress bar. Windows asks for administrator approval (UAC), as for any installation. Your settings are kept |
| Portable | MeowX downloads the new portable package and replaces the files in its folder (“Replacing files, MeowX will restart automatically…”). Your data folder is kept. Administrator approval is requested only when needed: when the folder is not writable for your account, or when the MeowX service registered from this folder has to be stopped and restarted |
A portable copy always updates from the portable package, and an installed copy from the installer, so one never overwrites the other.
If an update fails
Section titled “If an update fails”- Before MeowX quits (download error, checksum mismatch, the update helper could not start): MeowX shows Update failed with the reason and a Go to download page button. Nothing has been changed.
- After MeowX quits (for example you declined the UAC prompt, or some files were in use): a Windows message box says the update was not completed, gives an error code, and MeowX is started again in its previous version. The downloaded package is kept so you can install it by hand.
For a portable copy, if some program files are still locked (for example by a core that was started with administrator rights and cannot be stopped), MeowX changes no files at all rather than leaving a half-updated folder.
See Troubleshooting for what to do next.
Android
Section titled “Android”On Android, the new-version dialog offers Download APK, which opens the APK matching your device in your browser. Open the downloaded file and tap Install (Android may ask you to allow your browser to install apps). The new version installs over the old one and keeps your settings and subscriptions.
You can also download the APK yourself from the Download page at any time.
