Custom rules
Custom rules let you say “this domain goes Direct / Proxy / Reject” without editing your subscription. They are stored on your device, separately from the subscription, so they survive refreshes and apply to whichever subscription you use. They work the same way as in the iPhone and Mac app; see also Custom rules in the main app section.
Where they apply
Section titled “Where they apply”- Only in Rule mode. In Global and Direct mode, rules are not consulted. When you create a rule from a connection in another mode, MeowX says so.
- Before your subscription’s rules. Custom rules are checked first, top to bottom; the first one that matches wins. If none matches, the subscription’s own rules apply as usual.
- After Block QUIC, the bypass list and the push-service exception. Those are placed above custom rules, so they still win. See Settings.
- For new connections. If you are connected, MeowX reloads the configuration after each change. Connections that are already open keep their route until they are closed.
Matching
Section titled “Matching”| Match | Matches |
|---|---|
| Include subdomains | example.com and every subdomain, such as www.example.com |
| Domain only | Exactly example.com |
| IP | Connections whose destination is exactly this IPv4 or IPv6 address, without resolving domains to check it |
Input is cleaned up for you: you can paste a whole URL such as https://www.example.com/path and MeowX keeps only www.example.com. If you type +.example.com or .example.com, the match is set to Include subdomains. An IP address automatically uses the IP match.
Not supported: * wildcards and IP ranges (10.0.0.0/8). For ranges, use the bypass list (direct only).
Actions
Section titled “Actions”| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Direct | Connect directly, without a proxy |
| Proxy | Go through your subscription’s main proxy group |
| Reject | Block the connection |
“Proxy” does not store a group name, so the rule keeps working after you switch subscriptions. The main proxy group is:
- The proxy group that the subscription’s final
MATCHrule points to. - If
MATCHpoints to DIRECT or REJECT, or there is noMATCH: the firstselectgroup. - Otherwise a group named
GLOBAL, otherwise the first group.
The app shows the result, for example Proxy (Node Select). If the subscription has no proxy groups, the editor says that “Proxy” rules have no effect and traffic follows the subscription’s rules.
Creating rules
Section titled “Creating rules”From a connection (quickest)
Section titled “From a connection (quickest)”- Open the Activity tab and tap a connection (on wide screens, select it in the table).
- In the This domain goes card (This IP goes for connections without a domain), choose Include subdomains or Domain only.
- Tap Direct, Proxy or Reject.
The rule is put at the top of the list, so it takes effect even if a broader rule exists. If a custom rule already matches the connection, the card shows it (“Current rule: …”) with a delete button.
From settings
Section titled “From settings”- Go to Me › Traffic control › Custom rules.
- Tap +.
- Enter a domain or IP. For a domain, choose Domain only or Include subdomains.
- Choose the action and tap Add.
Tap a rule to edit it, and tap × on a row to delete it. Each row shows the domain or IP, the match type and the action (Direct in green, Reject in red, Proxy in the accent color).
Order and limits
Section titled “Order and limits”- The list order is the matching order, and new rules are added at the top, because rules added later tend to be more specific.
- There is at most one rule per value and match type. Adding the same domain with the same match type again updates the existing rule. Done from a connection’s details, it also moves that rule to the top; done from settings, it stays where it is.
- There is no drag-to-reorder. To move a rule to the top, set it again from a connection’s details.
- Up to 1,000 custom rules.
